Beneath the map lay a smaller package wrapped in tissue paper. A ribbon held a little card in place, and Martin had written four familiar words on it.
Open this last, sweetheart.
I set the package aside and picked up the letter the officer had delivered.
Martin explained that he’d begun planning the map long before his diagnosis. He wanted to choose fifty places for our fifty years of marriage, drawing from the ports he’d visited during his career and the destinations he’d always dreamed of exploring with me.
He had planned to finish it during his final voyages, before our anniversary.Plan Vacations
Then came the diagnosis, and everything changed.
In the letter, he apologized for leaving the map unfinished. He explained that two of the places he’d marked were stops on the cruise I was taking, and he’d arranged for me to find them.
