I came home without warning after four years in Canada and found my wife with a shaved head, painfully thin and struggling alone in the backyard.

“He has the right to know I’m sick,” Phedra said.

Phedra said the doctor wanted her to continue treatment.

Selina dismissed the doctors and then said the sentence that made my stomach turn.

Phedra mentioned the new SUV, Godfrey’s recently opened auto shop, and the remodeled house.

“I just want to finish my treatment,” she whispered.

Selina folded her arms.

My suitcase hit the floor.

Godfrey dropped his glass.

Selina clutched her chest.

Phedra stared at me as though she were seeing a ghost.

“Damian…”
