Ryan’s face changed.
He looked at our daughter.
Then he whispered:
“Yes.”
Amelia nodded.
“Okay.”
She picked up the little wedding candle she’d been holding.
“This is mine.”
Ryan frowned.
“What are you going to do with it?”
“Take it home.”
I almost smiled through my tears.
She wasn’t trying to destroy anything.
She simply refused to pretend that everything was okay.
Then the garden door opened.
Lina walked outside.
My younger sister was still wearing her wedding dress.
She stopped when she saw me.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then she looked at Amelia.
“Sweetheart, I never wanted to replace your mom.”
Amelia frowned.
“Then why do you keep calling yourself my new mom?”
Lina’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Amelia continued.
“You’re still Aunt Lina, right?”
Lina looked at me.
I said nothing.
Then Amelia asked the question that seemed to hurt my sister most.
